Proven Free Agents Defense

Postby jabshot1 » Tue Jun 10, 2014 1:57 pm

Well It's time to prepare for next years run. There are some good candidates to upgrade our team.

1) I trade Wilson to free up another $2.25Mil. Than I sign Niskanen. If I can get him for just under $5Mil I am okay with it. He's bigger and better than Barrie, Benoit or Elliot and still very young at 27. This gives me more scoring punch on D.
2) Sign Barrie to a double pay for 3 or 4 years. Using injury as leverage to not overspend.
3) Secure Holden to a longer contract 3-4 years for a bit less than Barrie.
4) Sign Paul Ranger to a 2 year just under $2Mil per year. He is an Upgrade to Sarich. Much younger.
5) Elliot to a 2-way to see if he gets better.
6) If Benoit will still sign cheap, like $1.3Mil range I think I would keep him.

Overall I have greatly improved the D with not too much cost increase. From the near $15Mil cost of D last year now we are around $18Mil with this D corp: Johnson 6'4 232lbs 39pts, Niskanen 6' 210lbs 46pts, Hejda 6'4 237lbs 17pts, Barrie 5'10 190lbs 38pts, Holden 6'4 207lbs 25pts, Benoit 5'11 192lbs 28pts, Ranger 6'3 210lbs 14pts, Guenin 6'3 207lbs 9pts. This takes the pressure off selecting D men in the draft which is much harder to predict. Also I can probably let Hejda go the next year to free up some more money.

As soon as I win power ball clan. I can only dream at this point, but it is a doable process. What do you think of signing Stas and then trading to NYI for the #5 pick? Than taking DalColle.

Something tells me that Niskanen will get close to $7 mil on the FA market. He's heads and shoulders the best D available (considering age, talent, etc) and most every team will be courting him. Factor in the Salary cap increase... some team will throw stupid money at him.

Unless the Avalanche are willing to overspend, Niskanen isn't going to come cheap. With that said, is he worth the Avalanche throwing some money at....maybe.

I don't think the Avalanche will do a sign and trade with Stastny. I'm still convinced their #1 plan is to keep him.
